Thajiwas Glacier

Thajiwas Glacier lies about 3–4 km from the main meadow of Sonmarg in Ganderbal district, Jammu & Kashmir. It sits at an altitude of roughly 3,000 metres and is one of the most accessible glaciers in Kashmir, making it a favourite day-trip destination for visitors to Sonmarg.

From Sonmarg, the glacier is reached by a short trek of about 3 km (1.5–2 hours one way) or by hiring a pony from the Sonmarg bazaar. The trail passes through pine and birch forest before reaching the glacier's rocky moraine. Pony rates are negotiable and the round-trip ride is the most popular option for families.

Yes. Thajiwas is a living glacier and retains snow and ice even through the summer months, which is a major draw for tourists visiting Sonmarg between May and September. Sledging on the snow and snow play are popular activities here, and local operators offer sledge rides.

May to September is ideal, when the Sonmarg road is open and the glacier is accessible. In peak summer you get both green meadows on the approach and snow at the glacier. The area is snow-bound and inaccessible in winter when the Srinagar–Sonmarg highway typically closes due to heavy snowfall.
