The Gulmarg Gondola is one of the world's highest cable car systems, operating in two phases. Phase 1 carries passengers from Gulmarg (2,650 m) to Kongdori (3,050 m) in approximately 10 minutes. Phase 2 continues from Kongdori to Apharwat Peak (3,980 m). Tickets are sold at the gondola base station on a first-come, first-served basis — advance online booking is not currently available. During peak winter ski season (January–February), queues can be very long; arrive by 7:30 AM to secure a spot. The gondola does not operate during heavy snowfall or strong winds.
Yes. Gulmarg has beginner slopes at the Kongdori level (Phase 1 gondola) that are well-suited for first-time skiers, with ski rental shops, equipment hire, and ski school instructors available on-site. The main beginners' slope is wide, gentle, and well-prepared. Advanced skiers and snowboarders should head to Apharwat Peak (Phase 2) for steep off-piste terrain and backcountry runs. The Jammu & Kashmir Ski & Snowboard Association certifies ski instructors; hiring a certified instructor for the first day is strongly recommended for beginners.
Gulmarg typically receives its first heavy snowfall in late November or December, and the main ski season runs from late December through early March. January and February are the peak months for deep powder snow, with snowfall sometimes exceeding 2 metres at the upper slopes. Spring skiing (March) offers firmer snow and warmer temperatures. By April, the snow at the lower slopes melts, though the Apharwat summit retains snow well into May. Summer (May–September) is Gulmarg's second tourist season — the meadows bloom with wildflowers and offer excellent trekking.
Indian nationals do not currently require any special permits to visit Gulmarg. Foreign nationals need to register at the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar and carry their passport and valid Indian visa. Some trekking routes beyond Apharwat Peak (particularly towards the Line of Control) are restricted and require permission from the Army. If you plan to trek to Alpather Lake or towards the Ferozpur Nala area, check the latest restrictions with the J&K Tourism Department before setting out.
Summer (May–September) Gulmarg transforms from a ski resort into one of Kashmir's most scenic trekking destinations. Popular activities include trekking to Alpather Lake (a high-altitude glacial lake at 3,900 m), horse riding through the vast flower meadows, mountain biking, golf on one of Asia's highest golf courses (2,650 m elevation), and Gondola rides to enjoy panoramic Himalayan views. The wildflower bloom in June–July turns the meadows into a tapestry of colour — an excellent time for photography.
Gulmarg is 56 km from Srinagar city centre, approximately 1.5–2 hours by road. Shared taxis from Srinagar's Tourist Reception Centre to Gulmarg run regularly and cost around ₹250–400 per seat. Private taxi hire costs ₹1,200–1,800 for the return journey. The road to Gulmarg passes through Tangmarg (50 km from Srinagar), after which it climbs steeply for the final 13 km. In winter, the road can be icy and snowbound — chains or 4WD vehicles may be needed for the upper section. Carry warm layers even when travelling from Srinagar.
Yes. Gulmarg has a good range of accommodation, from budget hotels and guesthouses in the main market area to mid-range and luxury hotels with direct valley views. The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa is the most well-known luxury property. During ski season, book accommodation at least 4–6 weeks in advance as the town fills quickly with domestic and international skiers. In summer, last-minute bookings are generally possible. Most hotels have generators for power cuts, which are common in winter.
In winter, thermal base layers, a down jacket, waterproof ski pants or outer shell trousers, gloves, a warm hat, and waterproof boots are all essential. Ski equipment (skis/snowboard, boots, helmet) can be rented on-site at reasonable rates, so you do not need to bring your own. Lip balm and sunscreen with high SPF are critical at altitude — the reflection off snow significantly increases UV exposure. In summer, layers are still important as Gulmarg evenings are cool (10°C–15°C) even in July, and rain is possible in the afternoons.
