Asia's Largest Brackish-Water Lagoon
Chilika Lake is a sprawling brackish-water lagoon on the east coast of India, spread across the Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam districts of Odisha where it meets the Bay of Bengal. Covering over 1,000 square kilometres at its peak in the monsoon, it is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest in the world.
The lagoon is one of the planet's richest wetlands, home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphin and a wintering ground for vast flocks of migratory birds. Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, a Ramsar site at its core, draws birdwatchers from around the world, while the islands, fishing villages, and sunset cruises make Chilika one of Odisha's most rewarding natural escapes.
Bhubaneswar Airport (BBI) — about 100 km from Satapada / Barkul.
Balugaon, Chilika, and Rambha stations sit on the Howrah–Chennai line.
Satapada is ~50 km from Puri; Barkul/Rambha lie on NH-16.
Buses and taxis from Puri and Bhubaneswar; boats run from each jetty.
Golden-sand beach and famous sunrises on the Bay of Bengal.
Core island sanctuary for wintering migratory birds.
Chilika Lake is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon and the second largest coastal lagoon in the world. It is renowned for its rare Irrawaddy dolphins, the vast flocks of migratory birds that arrive each winter, and Nalabana Bird Sanctuary at its heart. The lagoon is a designated Ramsar wetland of international importance.
The best place to spot Irrawaddy dolphins is around Satapada, on the eastern side of the lagoon near the sea mouth, where boat operators run dolphin-watching trips. Sightings are most likely in the early morning. Choose a responsible operator who keeps a respectful distance, as the dolphins are an endangered species.
November to February is the ideal window. The weather is pleasant, and this is when hundreds of thousands of migratory birds arrive from as far as Siberia, the Caspian Sea, and Central Asia, making Nalabana Bird Sanctuary a paradise for birdwatchers. Summers are hot, and the monsoon raises water levels and can disrupt boating.
Popular access points include Satapada (dolphins and the sea mouth), Barkul and Rambha (sunset cruises and island hopping), and Nalabana Bird Sanctuary (birdwatching). Kalijai Temple on an island in the lagoon is an important local pilgrimage site, and Birds' Island and Honeymoon Island are favourite boat stops.
The Satapada entry point is roughly 50 km from Puri (about 1.5 hours by road) and is the most popular gateway for dolphin tours. Barkul and Rambha lie along the Bhubaneswar–Chennai highway (NH-16) on the western shore. Buses, taxis, and trains (Balugaon, Chilika, and Rambha stations) all serve the area.
Boat rides are operated both by OTDC (Odisha Tourism) and licensed private boatmen, and are generally safe — life jackets are provided. Fares vary with the route and boat size; shared and private options are available. It is best to book through the OTDC counter or an authorised operator and agree on the route and price before departing.
